The Colombo bourse experienced sharp volatility amid global jitters sparked by new U.S. tariffs. The ASPI plunged 712.90 points on Monday following the U.S. imposing tariffs on several nations, including Sri Lanka, and China’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports - escalating fears of a U.S.- China trade war. However, markets rebounded as the U.S. paused tariff actions on all countries except China, offering temporary relief. Still, the intensifying U.S. - China trade tensions remain a key risk.
The ASPI gained 152.85 points WoW to close at 15,526.20 (+0.99% WoW) while the more liquid S&P SL20 index spiked 81.19 points WoW to close at 4,614.54 (+1.79% WoW).
