Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC (COMB) is the largest listed Licensed Commercial Bank (LCB) in Sri Lanka with an asset base of over LKR 2.5tn. The bank has been designated as a higher-tier Domestic Systemically Important Bank (D-SIB) by CBSL and is the only private sector bank to obtain the above status. The group has 271 branches in Sri Lanka while operating two foreign subsidiaries (Maldives and Myanmar) and overseas branches in Bangladesh (20 units). Given the low capital buffers of 137bps and 87bps over regulatory minimum tier 1 and total capital ratios as of 1Q 2024, COMB opted to raise common equity and tier 2 capital through a rights issue and a debenture issue respectively. Successful capital raising allows COMB to finance its loan book growth while managing above-minimum regulatory capital requirements.
